       Two Diaries have been found which give some insight
into life in Staplehurst during World War One.

The Reverend Thomas Thatcher. (1 January 1852 - 25 February 1936).
Pastor of the Congregational Church since 1881. He retired in 1925 and moved to Marden Road. He and his wide died within hours of each other. One son Wilfred died in WW1. One daughter Murel was a school teacher in Staplehurst.
His diary is the property of the Elders of the United Reformed Church, Staplehurst

Miss Mary Hallward (1867 - 1937).
Eldest daughter of the Reverend T W O Hallward, Rector of Frittenden and his wife, Mary Hoare. She had seven brothers and three sisters. She worked as a matron in a boarding school and as companion to various aunts.
